There are a hundred wonderful signs that the holidays are on their way. But the holidays don’t officially begin in Kansas City until the snowflakes dance!

For 40 years families throughout the Midwest have gotten their holiday season off to a warm start with Kansas City Ballet’s spectacular production of The Nutcracker.

Sights and sounds unfurl right before your eyes and ears, and everything you see and hear is filled with wonder. The unforgettable music score by Tchaikovsky played by Kansas City Symphony… the dazzling costumes and scenery… the Mouse King… the Tin Soldiers… the stunning choreography… the beautiful dancers swirling together in an unforgettable performance.

A Spectacular Show in an Amazing Arts Center

Kansas City Ballet’s presentation of The Nutcracker is the largest, most theatrically successful productions in the region, and this will be the third year it takes place in the magnificent Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Kansas City, with performances from December 7 through 24.

The logistics of a show like The Nutcracker fall far from the adage, “Lets put on a show!”
With a cast of 28 company dancers, dancers from KCB II,  the Ballet’s second company, and over 200 students from Kansas City Ballet School, the show features more than 500 costumes and accessories, 400 pairs of tights, 1,000 pounds of imitation snow, and scenery that requires 16 scene changes.

A Kansas City Tradition

Devon Carney, the company’s new artistic director added, “The Nutcracker is designed to enchant audiences of all ages. It’s such a pleasure for me to become a part of this wonderful Kansas City tradition, bringing together our company of dancers, students from our Ballet Academy, the excellent musicians of Kansas City Symphony, plus the many other artists and technicians that make it happen. It is truly is a joyous celebration of the holiday spirit.”

“We are extremely excited to return to the Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts with this perennial treat,” stated Jeffrey J. Bentley, executive director of the company. “For the past 40 years, we have produced this spectacular holiday classic to the delight of hundreds of thousands of adults and children. Since our move to the splendid Kauffman stage, a record number of people have attended this beloved production, with rave reviews for the dancers, design, and the Muriel Kauffman Theatre’s acoustical clarity and audience amenities. We are thrilled to present this much anticipated event to an even larger audience this year.”
