Parks and Lakes: Interview with Anita Gorman

Anita B. Gorman, commissioner emeritus, Kansas City Parks & Recreation Department—blessed with farsighted pioneering city founders, Kansas City’s boulevards and public spaces are integral to its quality of life.

What makes Kansas City’s camping , golf, tennis, and parks unique?

Our public support. The interest of our citizenry in professional football and baseball permeates out to an interest in other recreational activities in camping, golf, tennis and the city’s parks.

What are Kansas City’s best-kept camping, golf, tennis, and parks secrets?

Most people coming to Kansas City don’t think of fountains, but outside of Rome you won’t find any better than Kansas City.  Also, people are very active here, playing all kinds of sports. I’m 77 and play tennis 4 days a week, and that’s not unique.

What’s your insider-tip for someone visiting Kansas City’s camping, golf, tennis, and parks?

Call the Convention & Visitors Association to get plenty of free information. Also, the Starlight Theatre is the biggest outdoor theater in the whole country.

What do you love best about Kansas City?

Anybody can be on the team here. All you have to do is be willing to work, regardless of your class or background. You can’t say that for many other cities. We’re very inclusive.

Starlight Theater_029_AA.jpgIf you had only three places to take visitors, where would you take them?

The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial designed by Ralph Appelbaum. The Starlight Theatre for a musical. Also, you can’t miss the food. The Midwest is where good food comes from. I can’t recommend just one restaurant. Explore.
